AFRICAN DIASPORA CULTIVATING EDUCATION

ACE HISTORY

During the winter quarter of the 1998-1999 school year, the student body of UC Davis passed the FACE initiative. This allowed the formation of the student-run recruitment and retention center. The 1999-2000 academic year gave witness to a monumental event on the Davis campus, with the implementation of these programs. Currently these student led recruitment and retention centers are only the third of its kind within the nation. The upcoming years will see the development of these services, which are the only services on campus directly accountable to students.

RECRUITMENT

The Recruitment component of ACE focuses on uplifting the possibility of educational attainment in our youth. We provide academic support cultural enriching workshops, and prepare high school students for all avenues of higher education.

RETENTION

ACE strives to create a supportive environment that encourages academic success and cultural awareness. One of ACE’s main objectives is to help students achieve academic success. ACE centers its retention efforts on UC Davis students, looking to promote academic, cultural, and personal development. Specific programs that have been set up to accomplish this are the Peer Mentorship Program, the Annual Black Leadership Retreat, the Pride Retreat, Soul Speaks, Weekly Study Halls, and the end-of-the-year Barbeque usually held during Black Family Week.
